KAREN VAN DER LINDEN
Jenny Holzer
from Lustmord (1993–1994). exhibitionfem:
Lustmord is a german word that describes a sexual murder, often connected with rape. Jenny Holzer’s piece Lustmord (1993–94) was created in response to war crimes that took place in Bosnia. […]
The piece consists of three poems, which recount a sex crime from three perspectives: that of the perpetrator, the victim and the observer. The installation includes LED signs, displaying lines from each of the three poems, blended with each other, and out of order. The installation also included a wooden table with bones of a woman’s body laid carefully on top. The combination of text and physical objects explores the mental and physical aspects of violent crimes.
Holzer then writes each line of the poems on women’s skin and photographs them separately, so that the poems can never be read in full—she complicates the identities of the victim, observer and perpetrator, making it much harder for the viewer to determine which perspective each line came from.
